Bibliometric Evaluation of Communication Research in Colombia Using Scopus (2011-2021)

Resumen

This article discusses the Colombian scientific production around Communication registered in the Scopus database, the main trends of its scientific activity, and the characteristics of its intellectual, social, and thematic structure. Information published by Colombian authors in journals in the Communication category (2021 version) of the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) was extracted, adding journals indexed in Scopus. We used bibliometric indicators of production, impact, and collaboration and techniques such as cocitation, coupling, and co-occurrence using the VOSViewer software. The main results show a sustained growth in the number of documents and citations, the leadership of two of the most important national scientific journals such as Palabra Clave and Signo y Pensamiento, and the significant contribution of a group of national authors and widely recognized universities in the Communication teaching and research field: Universidad de La Sabana, Universidad Javeriana, and Universidad del Norte. The techniques revealed the structure of disciplinary research in the sample, the collaboration relationships, and the relevant research topics fronts. This helpful information for researchers, editors, and scientific policymakers highlights the vast diversity of topics and the absence of theoretical research.
